Endodontic Surgery
When inflammation or infection persists after root canal therapy, your endodontist may recommend endodontic surgery (commonly referred to as an apicoectomy or root-end resection) to preserve your tooth. During this procedure, the endodontist opens the gum tissue to expose the bone and remove any inflamed or infected tissue, along with the very end of the root. A root-end filling is placed to prevent reinfection, and the gum is sutured. Over a period of months, the bone heals around the root and function is restored.
